STEM & National Education Policy 2020

STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics and STEM Education refers to studying this concepts in school with a practical approach through experiments.

A STEM curriculum is designed to provide its students with maximum possible practical exposure and hands-on experience in a particular field. National Education Policy, 2020

National Education Policy (NEP) states, “Curriculum content will be reduced in each subject to its core essentials, to make space for critical thinking and more holistic, inquiry-based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis -based learning. The mandated content will focus on key concepts, ideas, applications, and problem-solving. Teaching and learning will be conducted in a more interactive manner; questions will be encouraged, and classroom sessions will regularly contain more fun, creative, collaborative, and exploratory activities for students for deeper and more experiential learning.”

How STEM helps in implementing NEP?

NEP mentions that the report card of the child must include the skilled or vocational topics along with the subjective topics. Earlier rote memorization of the topics was the basis of assessing a child’s learnings. Now, it has shifted to competency-based which promotes more analysis and conceptual clarity in child’s learning graphs. This purpose of assessment fulfills the desire to improve the whole schooling system and brings a continuous revision to the teaching-learning process for the development of a student.
